How to File a Return

 

Filing returns is now easier than ever before, thanks to the Saral form. However, there are other forms that can be filled out in specific cases. Here’s where you get to find out which is the right form for you. You can also download these forms. Note, however, that the forms are in Portable Document Format (PDF). To download them, you need Acrobat Reader 4.0 or later. This reader software can be downloaded for free from the Adobe Acrobat Reader Free Download site.

 

Form 1

For companies

Form 2

For assessees who have business income (other than companies).

Form 2A

For individual assessees who do not have any income from business or profession and income does not exceed Rs. 2,00,000

Form 2C

For assessees who have to file returns because they fall into the one-by-six category.

For assessees (other than companies and those with income from property held for charitable and religious purposes and are claiming exemption under section 11) whose total income does not include ‘profit and gains from business or profession’.

Form 3A

For assesses including companies claiming exemption under Section 11.

Form 60

Declaration form to be filed by a person who does not have either a PAN or a General Index Register (GIR) number and makes cash payments in cash in respect of transactions specified in clauses (a) to (h) of Rule 114B, listed below:

a.  Sale and purchase of immovable property valued at Rs 5 lakh or more;

b.  Sale and purchase of motor vehicles (excluding two- wheelers);

c.  Time deposits exceeding Rs 50,000 with banks or banking institutions;

d.  Deposits exceeding Rs 50,000 in post office savings banks;

e.  Contracts for sale or purchase of securities exceeding Rs 10 lakh;

f.   Opening an account (other than a time deposit) with a bank or a banking institution;

g.  Application for the installation of a telephone or cell phone     connection;

h.  Payment to hotels and restaurants in excess of Rs 25,000 at one time.

If you haven’t been allotted a PAN, you can quote your General Index Register (GIR) number, which is a number given by an Assessing Officer in the General Index Register maintained by him. The GIR lists designation and the ward/circle/range of the Assessing Officer.

Declaration form to be filed by a person who has agricultural income, and no other income chargeable to tax in respect of transactions specified in clauses (a) to (h) of Rule 114B.

  • Register yourself on Income-tax portal
  • Complete Registration process
  • Login to Income-tax portal
  • Downloading and filling Form 2F from http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
  • Create XML e-return file
  • Upload e-Return to Income-tax Server
  • Print Acknowledgement
  • Physical submission to the nearest designated Post Office(if you have not signed digitally)
